"When we arrived in the village we were surprised by the total absence of medical assistance and of descent premises for the doctor to come to."
The project started in 2004, when Nathalie Verwilghen and Patrick Bostwick decided to provide a space for medical care. It took a couple of years for them to obtain the trust of the population, find doctors to come on a regular bases and acquire the equipment and medicines necessary. Today, "The Hospitalito" is visited weekly by a governmental organisation, which provides consultations, medicines, vaccinations and pregnancy follow up.
The Train Station also organised food, medicine, water filters and stove donation, following hurricane Stan in October 2005.
Thanks to "Medicos del mundo", who provided medical assistance after Stan and gave a 6 month course to educate members of the native community to health issues, the village now has 3 health care providers, one of whom is Helena, now in charge of the area.
We would also like to thank the Rotary Club and private donators since without their help none of this would have been possible.
We still need your help to develop the premises and the project.
We always need more medicine, more water filters and stoves, we also wish to develop a medicinal garden near the school and offer alternative natural medicine. We are looking for donations and volunteers skilled in medicinal plants and natural medicine. We would like to develop this project with the children of the school educating them through this program.
